How to Fix “No IPv4/IPv6 Internet Access” Error in Windows
An IPv4 or IPv6 address helps identify and connect to other devices on the network. However, if you encounter the “No Internet Access” error when using IPv4 or IPv6, it is likely that your Internet connection is not working properly.
In this guide, we’ll explore several troubleshooting steps to help you fix the “No IPv4/IPv6 Internet Access” error and get your Internet connection back on track.
What causes the “No IPv4/IPv6 network access” error?
If your computer only gets an IPv4 or IPv6 address when connecting to a network, it will show a “No Network Access” error. This can happen for several reasons, but some common factors include problems with your router configuration, incorrect network drivers, incorrect DNS server address, and IPv6 compatibility issues.
While it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause, there are a few general fixes you can try to see if they resolve the issue. As such, here are some troubleshooting methods to help you fix the “No Internet Access” error on your Windows computer.
1. Forget and reconnect to your wireless network
You can fix the “No IPv4/IPv6 Internet Access” error by removing your wireless network settings from your Windows computer. Once done, reconnect to the same network and check for any improvements.
To forget and reconnect to your wireless network:
- Press Win + I to open Settings.
- Next, open it Network and Internet tab in the left panel.
- Click Wi-Fi.
- Next, click Manage popular networks.
- Click Forget it button next to the disturber The name of the Wi-Fi network connection.
- Next, click Win + A to open Action Center.
- Click Caret (>) button next to Wi-Fi: To manage Wi-Fi networks. Windows will search for available Wi-Fi networks and display them here.
- Click on Wi-Fi network and enter the password to connect to see if the error is fixed.

2. Manually restore the Winsock catalog
Another version of the “No IPv4/IPv6 network access” error affects only a select few applications. For example, you can access the Internet through your web browser, but not through your email client or software.
This can happen due to a corrupt network configuration. Fortunately, you can quickly fix this by resetting the Winsock catalog. It is achieved through a sequence of command line commands to restore critical network settings to their defaults.
To restore the Winsock catalog:
- Press Win+S: to open Windows Search.
- Type: cmd:. Then right click on Command line and choose Run as administrator.
- In the command prompt window, type the following command and click Enter:
netsh winsock reset catalog
- Once successfully launched, type the following command and click Enter:
netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
- If successful, close the command prompt and restart your computer. After the restart, check if the IPv4/IPv6 error is resolved.
3. Disable Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6)
If the “No Internet Access” error occurs only for IPv6, you can disable the affected IP in network properties to fix the problem. If you don’t have to use IPv6, the IPv4 protocol can handle your connection without any problems.
To disable IPv6:
- Press Win + R: to open Run.
- Type: control and click ok to open the control panel.
- Next, click Network and Internet.
- Click Network and Exchange Center.
- Click Change adapter settings in the left pane to view all your network adapters.
- Right click on your network connection and select Features:.
- In the Properties dialog, locate and remove the check mark Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) version
- Next, remove the note Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) version
- Click ok to save changes.
- Right-click on the network connection again and select Features:.
- Next, check Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) version Leave IPv6: option is not selected.
- Click ok to save the changes and restart the computer.
4. Configure your network adapter to automatically obtain a DNS server address
The Windows operating system allows you to define and use third-party DNS server addresses for security reasons. However, misconfiguring your DNS server address can cause the “No Internet Access” error.
To fix this, make sure the network connection is set to IPv4/IPv6 and to obtain the DNS server address automatically. Here’s how to do it.
- Press Win + R: to open Run.
- Type: ncpa.cpl: and click ok to open Network connection in Control panel.
- Right click on your network connection and select Features:.
- In Features: dialog, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP) and click on Features: the button. You can also double click IPv4: to access it Features:.
- Next, choose Get an IP address automatically and: Get the DNS server address automatically options.
- Next, choose Validate settings after exiting and click ok to save changes.
5. Reset your router and modem
Temporary problems with your router can also cause problems with your Internet connection. Perform a power reset to fix the problem. This involves turning off your router and modem for a moment and then turning them back on.
To restore power:
- Unplug your modem’s power brick from your power outlet.
- Next, unplug your router’s power adapter.
- Leave the devices idle for a few minutes.
- Once done, plug in the power brick and connect your modem and router.
- Wait until all the lights on your router stop blinking, then check if the error is fixed.
6. Update your network adapter drivers
Corrupt or outdated network adapter drivers can cause problems without a network connection. New drivers often come with performance improvements and bug fixes. That said, a fresh install can also help resolve issues caused by driver corruption.
To update the network adapter driver:
- Press Win + R: to open Run.
- Type: devmgmt.msc: and click ok to open Device manager.
- Next, expand Network adapters Section:
- Right-click the problematic network adapter (wireless or ethernet) and select Update the driver.
- Click Automatically search for drivers and follow the on-screen instructions.
- If you do not have a working internet, then click Search my computer for drivers.
- Next, click Let me choose from the list of available drivers on my computer.
- Select the latest driver update and click Next.
- After the driver is installed, close Device Manager and restart your computer.
Some laptop manufacturers provide their own applications to manage system drivers. For example, HP, Lenovoand: Asus: laptops are coming HP Support Assistant, Lenovo Vantageand: MyASUS: applications, respectively. Run the application and check if new updates are available for the PC.

7. Check your third-party antivirus and firewall
Third-party antivirus comes with a built-in firewall. Sometimes, a firewall can block legitimate connections, causing problems with your network connection.
Try temporarily disabling your third-party firewall or antivirus to see if the problem persists when the security software is disabled. Sometimes you may need to completely uninstall a security program to disable its firewall.
Fix “No IPv4/IPv6 Internet Access” error
Since this error can occur for several reasons, you should try all the troubleshooting steps until you find a working solution. In most cases, the Winsock catalog and resetting the IPv6/IPv4 settings can fix the problem. If not, look for third-party security software conflicts, bad driver issues, or failures with your modem and router.
