BATAVIA – More than 600 students, once potential members of the health community, walked through the Forum at Genesee Community College, checking out their options.
The first regional GLOW event of its kind brought together youth from Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming counties. They experienced “hands-on” career exploration working in hospitals and health systems and nursing, mental health, social services, and first aid, as well as health care career paths through local colleges and universities.
Glow With Your Hands Healthcare on Friday, March 24, 2023.
Mikayla Yohan, a sophomore at Byron-Bergen, said she visited vendors such as Rochester Regional Health and LeRoy Village Green and saw information about the University of Rochester.
“I’ve talked to them about some possible nurses and what avenues I can take to reach out to them and practices, maybe,” she said. Yohan said she plans to eventually attend GCC for nursing and pursue a licensed practical nursing (LPN) degree or possibly a registered nursing degree, depending on where her path leads.
Regarding what she first learned at GLOW With Your Hands: Healthcare, the sophomore said, “I learned that it’s really helpful to do multiple things at once. If you’re in one program, try and get involved with other programs. If you’re in BOCES, try to do an internship and spread the word. your career. If you know you want to do something, try other things first.”
Yohan said he would like to go to the emergency room or maybe the pediatrics.
“Every day I would like to see something different and meet a lot of people and go through a lot of opportunities and hardships,” he said.
Two Livonia students taking turns at GLOW With Your Hands were senior Megan Bailey and junior Makayla Pribanich. Pribanich says she plans to study nursing.
“My grandmother was a nurse and I was in a hospital before and I really liked it,” she said.
For her part, Bailey wants to do dentistry.
“I have been interested in dentistry since childhood. I actually wanted to be a Tooth Lover, but obviously that’s not really an option,” she said. “I decided dentistry was probably the best way to go and I’ve always loved going to the dentist.
The two had just seen Arc GLOW New York, which advocates for people with disabilities and can help provide them with the resources to make an impact. Pribanich said Arc is looking for interns under the age of 18 to help with some of Arc’s clients.
“I wanted to check out the Daemen College vendor because I’m thinking about college,” she said. “I’m still looking. I’m still not positive.”
Bailey said she should check out a health center in Orchard Park.
“They have a couple of different things,” he said. “It also has ‘Mommy and Me Care’ and some dental stuff. They have a wide variety.”
Kendall Central School District freshmen Vincent D’Agostino and Mikey Colucci plan to take different paths: D’Agostino plans to become a physical therapist or study athletic science and Colucci plans to become a line manager for an electric company.
D’Agostino said she wanted to learn more about physical therapy. He said he talked to WNY R-AHEC, who had a virtual reality display.
“It really helps you take a step-by-step approach to how you treat a patient with shots and stuff,” he said.
Colucci said that while he is not thinking about a career in health care, he has talked to several vendors. He said he could benefit from some health-related skills.
“Use CPR if someone is shocked and hurt,” he suggested, adding knowing how to apply a tourniquet to someone with a severe cut.
